Updated Power Permissions

Hi everyone!

As of today, Michael here is being canon updated to the end of Roswell New Mexico season 3. Due to this, his in-game powers have also been updated and they now require a permissions post. Please check it out here! That post has some spoilers for Michael's development in season 3, in case you're planning to watch!

Michael will be in an update coma from today and will wake up on Wednesday 20 October.

Permissions

Michael is an alien! His people are born with proteins which give them access to a spectrum of various psychic abilities, which manifest differently in each person, though some are more common than others. Michael is:
  • Telekinetic, meaning he can move things with his mind;
  • Psychically connected to other Oasians, meaning he's able to sense their presence and communicate telepathically with them;
  • Fireproof, meaning he can't be burned. This ability is passive. It's possible that Michael could also control fire, but he hasn't been shown to do this as of his current canon point;
  • Telepathic. He is a very powerful psychic who can enter another person's mind and read their thoughts. He was able to do this even to an older, more experienced psychic who also had the ability, during a battle of wills. He is able to take control of another person's mind and command them to do what he says. He does not appear to have a passive psychic ability, i.e. the ability to hear the thoughts of everyone around him without trying. Other aliens are shown to have that ability. Michael's ability is active, meaning he needs to make a deliberate effort to enter a mind, though when he does, he is able to see any part of it that he wants. He could also pull another person into his own mindscape, where he would have control of them. He also has strong psychic defences of his own, and is able to prevent his own mind from invasion in most cases (though his defences could be breached if he were physically weakened or exhausted). It should be noted that despite overcoming his initial rejection of this ability, Michael would still be very hesitant to use it unless he felt it was the only solution to a dire problem.

    Please let me know here if Michael can use his telepathic ability on your character. Despite this, he won't use it under normal circumstances, so any use would also need to be plotted out with you at the time.

    Roswell Season 3

    • At the end of season 2, Max, Isobel and Michael discovered a secret alien trapped in the turquoise mines along with a pod he'd stayed in. He's called Jones, and he looks exactly like Max.
    • They learn a number of important secrets from Jones about their history; their planet was called The Oasis, and their species is Oasian. Michael and Isobel's mothers led a rebellion against an immortal dictator leading their world, called the Tyrant.
    • They also discover turquoise which appears to have been altered by the crashed spaceship. Michael studies the turquoise, and discovers that it amplifies the properties of anything that carries an electric current, and as a result it amplifies the aliens' powers. It can also create and manipulate the alien glass that Michael has spent his life studying.
    • Jones claims to be the Savior, an alien with remarkable healing powers whom the Tyrant used as a weapon. He claims Max is one of many clones, and that Michael and Isobel's mothers had kidnapped him to do harm to him.
    • Jones is later revealed to be twisting the truth; he is the Tyrant, and his immortality is assured through his clones, whose bodies he possesses when the time is right. Michael and Isobel's mothers had destroyed the science used to make the clones, and kidnapped Max, the last clone, to keep him safe.
    • Jones had also told them that one of the Tyrant's abilities was that fire can't hurt him. After growing suspicious, Michael sets his own hand on fire and discovers that he's fireproof. He confronts Jones, who admits that he is the Tyrant's son and heir.
    • Later, Michael is able to catch a weapon that is genetically keyed to Jones and kills anyone else who touches it. Michael realises that he must be related to Jones, and that Jones is really the Tyrant and Michael's father. This also means that Michael's genetic father is Max.
    • Michael struggles with the reality of who his father is and worries that his own anger issues mean he is too much like Jones. Alex reminds him that he is always looking for a reason to hate himself, and says that if Michael is his father, then Alex is his. The two of them grow closer, and their romantic connection starts to rekindle.
    • Michael also grows closer to Rosa. He apologises to her for the events surrounding her death and admits that he had always carried guilt for how the community turned on her afterwards; he says none of them thought about what it would mean to put Rosa in the driver's seat of the crashed car. Rosa forgives him, and later he works to help her control her developing alien powers.
    • While they still trust him, Jones convinces Max to allow him to heal him, as his body is dying due to rejecting Noah's heart. Jones uses the moment to switch bodies with Max, which the others do not discover for some time.
    • Meanwhile, Maria has been having visions that someone close to them all is going to die, and that they will cover it up, indicating an alien connection. Eventually they realise that the coffin in her visions bears the name Valenti.
    • The gang work to protect Kyle. Michael volunteers to babysit Kyle during this time and they get more friendly. They also repair an old radio that Kyle's father had left for him. When Kyle later goes missing, Michael blames himself.
    • At the same time, Maria has fallen into a coma caused by Jones. Michael asks Alex to help him investigate Kyle's radio, suspecting it has something to do with what's going on. Alex, who is working in secret for the organisation Deep Sky, realises that the radio is similar to the Lockhart Machine in Deep Sky. Michael gets angry with him for not helping, but talks to Sanders about the radio instead, and with his help discovers that the signal from it leads to Deep Sky's building.
    • Alex has been investigating what's happening himself and discovers that Kyle is the nephew of his boss at Deep Sky. His boss is revealed to have found a comatose Kyle and is taking care of him.
    • Alex and Michael later work together to rescue Max, who is trapped in Jones' body and held inside his pod, from Jones while the latter is engaged in a psychic battle inside Maria's mind. Alex helps Michael to control his emotions and complete the mission successfully by telling him the story of how he lost his leg in Iraq. Alex relates letting his emotions get the better of him after an Iraqi boy he had befriended was killed. Alex tells Michael that he is a part of him that he can't bear to lose. After the mission, Michael kisses Alex and they become an official couple.
    • Alex then gets caught up with investigating the Lockhart Machine, which causes him to have hallucinations that almost lead to him jumping to his death. Michael reaches him in time to pull him off the ledge, and they finally work on the machine together. Michael uses his powers to open the machine so that Alex can remove the technology causing it to malfunction, which is revealed to be tech created by Alex's father.
    • The gang discover that the Lockhart Machine is coded to give a message to a specific alien, a new one that they track down to a preacher called Dallas. Michael is initially uncomfortable with speaking to him as they have very similar histories in foster care, but Alex convinces him to face his past and talk to the man. He does so, and Dallas agrees to receive the message. It reveals the key to separating Max and Jones, but unknown to Max and Isobel, it also warns Dallas that if separating them does not work, he will have to kill Max.
    • When Sanders questions why Michael doesn't work on developing his powers, Michael admits that he inherited his father's ability to possess other people and completely control their actions. He admits to having once done it by accident, when he was angry during a fight, and that he almost killed someone because of it. He doesn't want to use those abilities because he fears becoming just like Jones. Sanders tells him that there is no darkness in him, which is later reinforced by Max and Isobel. Michael later successfully uses the ability to push Jones out of the Sheriff's head when he is controlling her.
    • Michael also builds handcuffs to inhibit Jones' powers, but he and the others are pulled into Jones' mindscape before he can use them. Jones is shown able to invade the minds of all the others, but Michael resists him. Jones shatters Isobel's sword, and the shards embed into Dallas' chest and neck. Jones then kidnaps Michael to try and break into his mind.
    • Michael manages to break into Jones' mind first, discovering that he had killed his Triad to gain power, and that he wants the Lockhart machine. They fight, and Michael almost escapes, but Jones injures him and then attacks Sanders. He then finally gets into Michael's head, seeing images of his love for Alex and the Lockhart Machine. He stabs Michael and then leaves. Maria's visions lead her to Michael and she's able to staple his wound together before he bleeds out.
    • Michael goes to the Deep Sky facility, where everyone else had taken Dallas so that Kyle could operate and save his life. Jones is threatening the rest of the gang and is holding Kyle, Eduardo and Heath out a window. Michael gives him the Lockhart Machine but Jones opens Michael's wound again and lets them fall anyway. Michael, Isobel and Max manage to save them, after which Max presumably heals Michael's wound as it isn't shown to trouble him afterwards.
    • Liz has injected Jones with a serum that will separate him and Max. They need to defeat him within the day or the serum won't be effective. Michael rigs up a machine to trap Jones and inhibit his powers, while Alex turns the Valenti radio into a copy of the Lockhart machine (which they can use to switch Max and Jones' bodies back). Michael is worried, not that their plan won't work but that it will, and he'll end up killing his own father. He admits he's afraid that he'll hate himself afterwards, and that the self-loathing will drive him and Alex apart like it had in the past. Alex reassures him that neither of them are the people they used to be.
    • The plan works to an extent, but when bats are attracted by the infrared signal from the machine, their swarming breaks it and Jones is able to get free. Isobel fights him and Jones' sword is broken. He and Max end up struggling and in the end, it's unclear who is in which body. Liz is able to work it out from talking to them, and she shoots Max with the serum that will permanently sever his link to Jones. Jones attempts to grab hold of Max and switch back, but Michael sends a shard of the broken sword into Max's hand and he uses it to kill Jones.
    • Afterwards, Michael and Alex meet in front of the statue of Alex's father, and reflect on their past. Alex unwraps the hand that Jesse had once broken and they walk down Main Street hand in hand, finally feeling that they've won.

    APPEARANCE: Tall with an athletic frame. He has dark brown curly hair, light brown eyes, and is lightly stubbled. Played by Michael Vlamis.
    FASHION: Usually casual, lots of jeans, t-shirts and shirts. Usually seen in his cowboy boots and hat - just imagine what a modern cowboy might look like, and that's Michael.
    DEMEANOUR: Lazy, often slouches in his seat and peers out from under his hat.
    LANGUAGES: English, some Spanish.
    OLFACTORY: He smells like the rain, which is what aliens in general smell like in Roswell. He also drinks a lot of tequila and works on cars, so smells like those, too.

    FRIENDSHIP: Michael has a reputation as an outcast. He'll be friendly enough in conversation, though he tends to be wry and sardonic, and will rarely get overly personal. Michael is a good person deep down, but he's not always good at showing it. He'll also 'test' the affection of anyone who gets close to him, never trusting that they'll stick around. He's slow to trust and is avoidant of sharing his problems even with his closest friends.
    KISSING: Sure, if he's into you.
    HUGGING: Go ahead! Though if you're not either (a) flirting with him or (b) a very close friend, he'll think it's weird.
    SEX: He's a former playboy mending his ways, so these days, he prefers feelings to be involved.
    ROMANCE: It's possible, but not easy. Michael will 'test' the love of people close to him by pushing them away, even to the point of flirting with/kissing other people in front of them, or doing things that he knows they have a problem with to see if they leave him for it. He thinks everyone will leave eventually, and he's often right. He might well love you, but it'll never be that simple.
    TELEPATHY: He's pretty used to it, and will be open to and comfortable with telepathic communication. Try to get into his head to find out his secrets, though, and it's a different story. He has strong telepathic defences and will keep even the strongest of psychics at bay for a while. Try him when he's injured, emotionally compromised, or very tired, and you'll have more luck. I'm OOCly fine with it under those circumstances, but let's talk about it first!
    POWERS: Like all of his species, he has a variety of psychic abilities. He's telekinetic, psychically linked to other Oasians, and he's a powerful telepath. He's also completely fireproof and can't be burned. I have a permissions post for his abilities here.
    TRIGGERS: Michael grew up an orphan and was passed around the system, dealing with some abusive guardians along the way. Abuse in general will set him off, as will attitudes such as racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. - if you're treating someone badly because they're different, he'll have a problem with you. He's also not wild about religion and will at the very least be uncomfortable around people of faith.
    FIGHTING: This is his favourite way to communicate, please do.

    Positive

    • Intelligent

      Michael works as a mechanic, lives in a trailer, and doesn't at first glance appear to have a lot going for him. Most people know him as a troublemaker, someone known for getting into fights, for drinking, and for being a general bad influence. However, he's hiding a strong intellect and keen engineering skills, far beyond his training as a mechanic. At school, he was the only person to score higher than Liz Ortecho. Any consideration of what he might do with that intellect vanished after Isobel appeared to kill Rosa, with Michael and Max both promising to stay in Roswell with her. Now, ten years later, Michael uses his real talents to investigate, and work on rebuilding, the alien spacecraft that brought him to earth. His interest is in alien technology, not human science, and he shows his intelligence and capabilities when he needs to work with Liz on alien science.

    • Selfless

      Although he is a person who finds it hard to trust, Michael very much cares about the people around him. He wouldn't describe himself as heroic, and would say that he likes to keep to himself, to his own business, and not concern himself with other people's. However, when someone he cares about comes to him, he'll do everything in his power to help them. As a teenager, when Alex's dad attacked him with a hammer, Michael stepped in without any thought for himself, and came away from the situation with a shattered left hand that couldn't fully heal and still causes him pain. Even when his relationship with them was strained, Michael came to Max and Isobel's side every time any of them called for him. When he found Maria in tears at her bar, he stopped and comforted her, despite not knowing what was wrong, and despite not being all that close to her at the time. Although Michael has a tendency to push people away, and prevent them from getting too close to them, he's extremely caring and will always try to help the people he loves. The most prominent moment which displayed this trait was when he found Isobel apparently killing Rosa. He believed at the time that Isobel was behaving as she was due to trauma. Despite initially wanting to call the authorities, Michael agreed with Max that knowing she was a killer would further damage Isobel's psyche, and so to protect her, he told her that he had killed Rosa by accident. Later, when Liz had returned to town to investigate Rosa's death, Michael was entirely winning to admit to his guilt and go to prison for a crime he never committed, all to keep Isobel safe. Michael doesn't always make the right choices, especially when it comes to his relationships - but he'd do anything to help someone he loves, even at a cost to himself.

    • Untrusting

      Michael is carrying a host of abandonment issues. His earliest memory is of waking up on a crash site on Earth, having lost his whole family and everyone he knew. Shortly afterwards, he was separated from Max and Isobel - the two aliens he'd found after waking - when the Evans family chose to adopt them and not him. What followed was years of moving through the adoption system, going from one family to the next. His upbringing was not only fragmented across different families, it was abusive. Michael learned early on that he couldn't trust anyone other than himself. As he reconnects with them, he does trust and feels a bond with Max and Isobel, and he is intensely loyal to them. However, this loyalty leads him to push himself away from them, when he helps Max to cover up the supposed murder of Rosa by Isobel, and takes the blame for it himself. This act isolates Michael from his only real friends. Unable to cope with the memory of what they had done, Michael pushes Isobel and, particularly Max, away. The trauma exacerbates his existing issues, making him more prone to outbursts of anger which also ends up pushing Alex away from him. Michael loses his most important relationships all at the same time, because of his overpowering instinct to close in on himself when he's in trouble. He keeps himself at an emotional distance from everyone for more than a decade, and struggles to let anyone else in. Michael believes that the people around him are fundamentally unreliable; even when they claim to care about him, they'll leave him some day. He continually 'tests' those who love him by hurting them and pulling away from them, trying to see if they'll leave - and, when inevitably they do, he's both devastated and vindicated at the same time. Years after Rosa's death, when he and Alex reconnect again, they're unable to pull towards each other without pushing each other away. Their shared history sits uncomfortably between them, and although Michael acknowledges that he will always love Alex, he becomes convinced that they're not good for each other. Michael is the victim of his own inability to trust people and let them in. He's the guy who leaves before the other person can leave him; he'll push them away and hurt them, even when he loves and needs them. This continues even after he acknowledges that he isn't good for Alex and wants to be good for someone, when he reacts to Max's death by sabotaging his relationship with Maria. No other trait more fiercely defines Michael as a character; his abandonment issues, and the untrusting nature that comes from them, have shaped his whole life.

    • Angry

      Michael has been angry at the world for as long as he can remember. He would say that being abandoned on an alien planet will do that to a person, but the truth is, he was dealing with more anger about it than Max and Isobel even before they were adopted without him. Because of this, his anger with the world can't be fully put down to what the world has done to him, though his experiences certainly haven't helped. Michael does not believe that people are inherently good, something that feeds into his distrustful nature. When questioned by Max about why he would never let him heal his broken hand, he explains that Alex had made him think that humans could be good, and the scars left by his father reminded him that they weren't. Michael also tends to channel most of his other feelings into his anger, using it as his dominant means of expression. He's gets into a lot of fights, and is regularly arrested for minor offences. He's someone who operates on the fringes of society, rejecting most natural authorities and living in a trailer which underlines his deeper desire for his residency to be temporary. When faced with adversity and upset, Michael will spoil for a fight. His emotional state is also connected to his powers; he recounts his telekinesis manifesting in destructiveness in his youth, which made him all the more difficult to live with, and further destabilised his home life. He also tends to hold grudges, finding it very difficult to forgive people who have wronged him; ten years after high school has finished, he still holds a grudge against Kyle, and can't understand how Alex can forgive him for all that happened there. He also struggles to give Alex a second chance, remembering always that Alex left to join the Air Force, and resenting that he chose to walk away from him. Michael does not easily forget or forgive. Beyond all of that, it's also worth noting that a considerable amount of his anger faces inwards. Michael dislikes many parts of himself; his propensity to ruin his own relationships, his secretiveness, his mistakes. He has expressed the desire to be better, to look to the future and not the past, and to find someone that he's good for. He puts a lot of blame on himself for what's gone wrong in his life, even when it was nothing he could have controlled. As with everything else, his feelings of self-loathing and guilt are expressed as outward anger, which makes it hard for him to get the support he needs.

    • Secretive

      It's unsurprising that due to the nature of his life, Michael has a tendency towards keeping secrets. He has always hidden his alien nature from the world, partly at the behest of his 'brother' Max, out of fear that he would be captured, experimented on or even killed by human authorities. It's worth noting his context, as a refugee alien on earth; he's grown up in a society whose pop-culture is fascinated with aliens. For every media that held a positive depiction, there was a negative one. Michael, Max and Isobel never thought they could take the risk to tell anyone, including their friends and family. However, Michael has gone further than either Max or Isobel in this regard; he has kept a considerable number of secrets from them, too, including the lab he created to study alien tech. In particular, he grew emotionally apart from Max after the incident between Isobel and Rosa, to the extent that he didn't tell Max he was bisexual, and didn't tell him how his hand was really broken. On his sexuality, Michael also spent ten years or more keeping secret his relationship with Alex Manes. Over the course of series 1, Michael's secrets are slowly revealed to his friends. Though he fights this development at first, he eventually becomes more open, and even eager to relieve the burden his secrets have put on him. He says openly that he's tired of secrets, and willingly answers all of Alex's questions about his past. Despite this, Michael continues to have a secretive nature, and he often acts alone without running his plans by his friends or alien family. At his current canon point, his recent trip to Caulfield saw him take off with Alex and Kyle in the search for aliens without so much as mentioning to Max and Isobel that he was going anywhere. Even though he has developed to the point where he dislikes his own secretiveness, it's still natural for Michael to be secretive.


    Powers and Abilities:

    Michael is an alien. He doesn't know what species he is, but he knows he's not human. Due to this, he has the following powers and abilities:
    • Alien physiology: Michael may look human, but he's very different at a genetic level. His body contains proteins that look different from what's in the human body, and his organs look different too - they have a synthetic look, similar to the material used to build his space craft. On the inside, his body contains materials that look similar to the alien technology of the spacecraft he landed in. On a practical level, his temperature is higher than the average human's, and he can drink acetone which acts as a painkiller. His powers seem to come from a natural electromagnetic interaction; it's also noticed that he, like other alien things, smells like rain.

    • Psychic communication: Michael can 'feel' other aliens of the same species. He's able to hear their mental distress and get a sense for where they are. He has also sensed that something was wrong with Isobel, even when she was not in control of her body due to being blacked out.

    • Telekinesis: This is Michael's main ability. He's able to move things with his mind with considerable finesse. He has been shown moving large and heavy objects such as his trailer, and smaller more precise objects like kitchen knives. He can also use his mind to enhance the strength of his punches and kicks. He can use his powers with thought alone, or can channel it through his hands and feet.

    • Alien pollen: Michael's alien abilities are rendered null when he's exposed to the pollen of a particular flower, which seems to grow only where there are alien remains.

    • Serum and antidote: Michael is vulnerable to the serum created by Liz Ortecho. Intended to nullify alien powers, it does its job too well and will kill any alien injected with it. Michael helped Liz to develop the antidote which cures the effects of the serum, provided it is administered in time.

    • Other: As well as his alien abilities, Michael is noted for his intellect. Liz claims that he is the only person whose scores exceeded hers in school, and questions why he never went to college or sought to do more than working as a mechanic. The science that interests him is alien, not human. He is a skilled mechanic, and is shown able to fix everything from cars, to electrical signs, to the broken pieces of the crashed ship's console.
